MKBHD Smartphone Awards 2022: My Takeaways

MKBHD Smartphone Awards 2022 Takeaways Header

I normally DO NOT post anything about tech here. That usually goes to Utterly Techie. However, I feel that my thoughts on this topic would be too opinionated for that website. With that in mind, I’ll be sharing all my takeaways on the results of the MKBHD Smartphone Awards 2022.

You should probably watch the video first before reading on.

Done watching? Good. On with the takeaways.

My Takeaways

  • Nice to see ASUS get a lot of love for not only the ROG Phone 6, but also the Zenfone 9. (We sadly didn’t get the latter probably due to poor sales of the Zenfone 8.) Getting all those mentions behind the MVP winner is an achievement for a small phone. Well deserved! 👏
  • I agree with his choice for the Best Camera being the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max. He did say that his basis is what phone has the “best camera system”. Sure, other phones may have standout photo quality in standard or low light. The iPhone won due to its fast autofocus, the ease of use, the consistency of results between all the cameras, and (most importantly) its video quality. Until a phone can nail BOTH photos and videos with great consistency, the iPhone can’t be beat.
  • OnePlus REALLY DESERVES its Bust of the Year award with the OnePlus 10T. That phone basically lost its identity with the omission of the alert slider and OxygenOS basically being a flavor of ColorOS. I don’t think even the OnePlus 11 can save the brand at all.
  • The fact that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the only Samsung phone with an award (Best Big Phone) shows how complacent the company is with its foldables. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 and the OPPO Find N2 are the only foldables that got mentions.
  • It’s nice that Google really found its groove with the Pixel 7. Too bad it’s only available in a handful of countries. Oh well. (I will keep beating this drum until it becomes officially available in the Philippines or the Pixel phones get discontinued.)

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the results here are just based on the opinion of one tech reviewer. I think people should check similar kinds of content from other tech reviewers. Gathering them all up would give you a clear pattern as to which phones really stood out this year.

That’s it for my takeaways from the MKBHD Smartphone Awards 2022! Do you agree or disagree with his results or my thoughts? Sound off in the comments!
